The Long Putter Debate

With his win this weekend at the Wyndham Championship, Webb Simpson became the sixth player this year to win on the PGA Tour using a long putter, fanning the fire for those who believe that the USGA should consider banning the club. The point of contention is not the length, per se, but the fact that due to the length a player can brace the butt end of the grip against his/her body thus creating a fixed point from which to swing the club consistently, and in essence, reducing the number of moving parts in the stroke. We all know that reducing moving parts tends to lend itself to more consistency and less room for error.

Isn't interesting that the two best players in the last decade both believe that the key to putting is what you do before the stroke even occurs? One would expect some technical advice on making more putts from these two but both agree the importance of a solid and consistent pre-shot ritual is the key to making more putts.

Some Thoughts on Putting

The putter is the most important scoring club in the game of golf. Every Tour Pro will credit their putting for their best rounds. Kenny Perry stated it well when he stated, just three more putts made in a tournament will make the difference between winning or just finishing in the top 20.

Making putts is 50% of a par score. (Making putts is a confidence builder that affects other parts of the great game of Golf). There is more enjoyment when that putt is in the hole.

If you understand the history of golf and the technology that has transformed the game, you understand how new technology and designs has changed this great game for more than 55,000,000 golfers worldwide. Many of us older golfers can remember the persimmon and laminated wood drivers, the first fiberglass shafts and aluminum shafts, unmatched steel shafts. OK some remember wood shafts as well, but not me.

There has always been resistance to outside the box innovation. However, better performance soon proved that new out-of-the-box ideas would dominate the game.
